Ho Chi Minh City - Cu Chi Tunnels - Cai Be - Can Tho - Phnomh Penh - Siem Reap - Angkor Wat

Vietnam and Cambodia – two destinations filled with intriguing treasures, ancient ruins and thousands of years of history. Cruise the Mekong River, explore the world’s largest religious monument and visit memorials recalling Cambodia’s darkest times.

Day One & Two  -  UK / Ho Chi Minh City

Today you’ll depart on your flight via Abu Dhabi to Ho Chi Minh City, formerly known as Saigon. You’ll arrive on day 2 and transfer to your hotel, located in the heart of Vietnam’s largest and most energetic city.

During an evening at leisure, why not walk to the Ben Thanh Market area near to your hotel, where you’ll find many restaurants, food stalls and souvenir shops which stay open late into the night.

Day Three  -  Cu Chi Tunnels

On today’s included excursion you’ll drive through countryside which was once a stronghold of the Viet Cong to the fascinating Cu Chi Tunnels. A short film will tell you all about what life was like for the soldiers who lived here, before you get to take a look at this cramped network of tunnels, which also acted as supply routes and hospitals for thousands of guerrilla fighters during the Vietnam War.

An optional afternoon sightseeing tour gives you the chance to discover Ho Chi Minh City highlights such as the iconic Notre Dame Cathedral and the Reunification Palace.

This evening we include a traditional Vietnamese dinner of Pho, an aromatic rice noodle soup, at Pho 2000. This very informal restaurant, near your hotel and Ben Thanh Market, became well known after former US President Bill Clinton and his entourage dropped by for lunch in 2000 – he was the first US president to visit the country since the Vietnam War.

Day Four  -  Mekong Delta

You’ll leave Ho Chi Minh City behind today and drive to the town of Cai Be, situated in the Mekong Delta region. One of the world’s greatest rivers, the Mekong descends for 3,000 miles from the Tibetan Plateau to the South China Sea, and is constantly busy with sampans, barges and houseboats.

From Cai Be you’ll take a boat trip along a maze of canals to the lovely town of Vinh Long, where you’ll witness the delicate art of bonsai and visit a handicraft village to see craftsmen at work. Later, take the journey by road from Cai Be to Can Tho for an
overnight stay.

Day Five  -  Can Tho

You’ve an early start today, but it’s definitely worth it for the wonderful sights, sound and smells you’ll experience at Can Tho’s bustling floating market. You’ll see boats lined up side by side piled high with household goods and exotic home-grown fruits and vegetables, and hear the cries of traders furiously selling their wares as you revel in the delicious aroma of simmering noodles. After your visit there’s time to relax as you travel by road to the sleepy riverside border town of Chau Doc.

Day Six  -  Phnom Penh

Your morning will be spent travelling by boat to Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh, arriving around lunchtime. After checking into your centrally-located hotel you’ll take a tour which includes visits to two poignant sites. The Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum is housed in the grounds of the former high school taken over by Pol Pot’s security forces and converted into notorious Security Prison 21 (S-21) in 1975. Inside, photographs and documents chronicle his reign of terror and serve as a memorial to the many victims.

Your tour moves on to the infamous Choeung Ek, or Killing Fields, the site of the mass grave of some of the one million-plus victims of the Khmer Rouge. Today, what remains is a touching memorial marked by a Buddhist stupa filled with human skulls and bones.

Day Seven  -  Siem Reap

Today begins with a drive through picturesque countryside, with an included lunch en route to Siem Reap – the gateway to the temple complex of Angkor Wat.

An afternoon arrival at your hotel gives you plenty of time to relax and use excellent facilities including an outdoor pool and spa. If you choose to venture into town later, there’s a good choice of restaurants on offer.

Day Eight  -  Angkor Wat

A day of discovery is in store today as you enter the incredible centuries-old Angkor Wat complex. Your tour begins at Angkor Thom whose entrance is lined with statues of the Gods of good and evil, and moves on to the Bayon Temple, where you’ll be greeted by hundreds of carved smiling faces gracing its towers. For a panoramic view of the complex, walk to the top of the pyramid-shaped Phimeanakas Temple, where two ponds once used for religious rituals now act as swimming pools for local children.

Take in the views once surveyed by King Jayavarman VII from the Terrace of the Elephants, constructed in the late 12th or early 13th century and perhaps the grandest royal terrace in Cambodia. Walk to the north end to discover the Terrace of the Leper King, where an alley filled with intricate carvings lies, before taking a short drive to Ta Prohm. Shrouded in dense jungle with giant tree roots crawling over the crumbling ruins, this temple is one of the area’s most magical spots.

After time back in Siem Reap, for lunch if you wish, you’ll return to the temple complex this afternoon to see its crowning glory, the magnificent Angkor Wat. This massive, three-tiered pyramid rises 65 metres from the ground and is the world’s largest religious monument and the national symbol of Cambodia.

Day Nine & Ten  -  Ho chi Minh City / UK

On day 9 you’ll fly back to Ho Chi Minh City for your flight back to the UK via Abu Dhabi, arriving on day 10.

Please note: This holiday includes walking in areas of rough ground, gradients and steps.
